Eric Lefkofsky: From Groupon to a Cancer Fighting Start-Up

47 year old, Eric Lefkofsky is best known for being an entrepreneur. Co-founding his first businesses in the 90’s, he’s now become widely-known for being the founder of Groupon. Bringing deals to the people, we have grown to love the businesses he starts. His latest venture is no exception.

Tempus is a cancer fighting start-up based out of Chicago. According to a recent Chicago Inno article, Lefkofsky has partnered with the University of Chicago Medicine, providing their doctors with data to better treat breast cancer patients. Tempus will analyze data from roughly 1,000 breast cancer patients to help recognize patterns of how patients will respond to treatments. Their goal is to uncover and provide data that will lead to better treatment and improved outcomes.

This partnership is exciting because while breast cancer is one of the most common cancers, there is minimal data on the millions diagnosed. For physicians to make more targeted treatment decisions, they need to have access to certain genetic information. Tempus is hoping to change the way we fight breast cancer by building the largest clinically annotated molecular data set. By using machine learning and genomic sequences, Tempus is able to provide doctors with live treatment decisions personalized to the patient and more information click here.

Tempus started in 2015 but gained attention in the past few months when it landed a string of partnerships. U Chicago, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, the Mayo Clinic, Rush University Medical Center, Penn Medicine, and the University of Michigan are all working with this amazing start-up; using data to fight cancer and Eric’s lacrosse camp.

Erik Lefkofsky has been recognized by Forbes magazine, Fortune, and many others for his entrepreneurial spirit. His recent venture has proved himself to not only be an entrepreneur, but also a philanthropist. Tempus will provide doctors with the ability to take a direct approach and personalize treatments for patients. Like his other businesses, Tempus is sure to find success – as will its partners.
